Telegram for Android 13.2.0: no FCM push registration on a fresh install
Device: Google Pixel 10a (stallion), Android 17, build CP3A.261005.005
Google Play services: 26.43.30
Affected: Telegram 13.2.0, both the Play Store build and the telegram.org web build.
Not affected: Telegram 12.10.6 web build.
Symptom: on a fresh install of 13.2.0, no push notifications arrive while the app is in the background.
Messages appear only when the app is opened. The Google push log on the phone shows no messages for Telegram.
At every start, 13.2.0 logs:
(system logs) FirebaseApp: Default FirebaseApp failed to initialize because no default options were found.
(system logs) FirebaseInitProvider: FirebaseApp initialization unsuccessful
D/tmessages: FCM Registration not found.
E/tmessages: java.lang.IllegalStateException: Default FirebaseApp is not initialized in this process org.telegram.messenger.
Cause found: resources.arsc in the 13.2.0 APKs has no google_app_id resource and no Firebase app ID value. The 12.10.6 APK has both, and its log says "FirebaseApp initialization successful".
How I checked the APKs:
Pull the installed base APK from the phone:
adb shell pm path org.telegram.messenger
adb pull <path to base.apk> base.apk
Read resources.arsc from the APK and search it for
the resource name "google_app_id" and for values in the Firebase app ID
format "1:<digits>:android:<hex>".
Results:
13.2.0 Play (org.telegram.messenger): google_app_id found 0 times, Firebase app ID: none
13.2.0 web (org.telegram.messenger.web): google_app_id found 0 times, Firebase app ID: none
12.10.6 web (org.telegram.messenger.web): google_app_id found 1 time, Firebase app ID: 1:760348033671:android:7396e651423888c3f66e22
FirebaseInitProvider reads google_app_id from the app resources at start.
Without it, Firebase does not initialize, and the app cannot get an FCM token.
Users who updated from an older version probably keep a saved push token, so they do not see the problem.
Workaround that worked (2026-11-06):
Uninstall 13.2.0. Install 12.10.6 (web build) and sign in. Pushes work.
Install 13.2.0 over 12.10.6 without uninstalling.
13.2.0 still logs the IllegalStateException at start, but it keeps the saved push token, and pushes work (for example at 21:37:48, with the screen off since 21:30:18).
Steps to reproduce
Install Telegram 13.2.0 on a clean android phone
Log in, close the app and lock the screen
Receive a message in telegram - no push notification
Open the app - notification appears
