Telegram removes www from the clickable URL attached to some link previews when the original URL uses https://www. The original URL remains correct in the message, but the preview's clickable URL becomes https://example.com/page instead of https://www.example.com/page.
For affected URLs, removing www causes the preview link to open the website's homepage instead of the specific page.
Refreshing the preview by forwarding the URL to WebpageBot does not resolve the issue: the original URL remains correct, but the clickable URL attached to the generated preview still loses www.
The issue affects Telegram Desktop, Android, and iOS. The same URL works correctly when used as an original URL or as a manually created hyperlink.
Steps to reproduce
Open Telegram.
Send a message containing a URL in the format https://www.example.com/page.
Wait for Telegram to generate the link preview.
Check the URL associated with the preview.
For some URLs, observe that Telegram removes www from the preview URL.
Click the preview and observe that it opens the website's homepage instead of the specific page.
For the same URL:
https://www.example.com/page works correctly.
www.example.com/page works correctly in Telegram.
https://example.com/page opens the website's homepage.
Current result
For some URLs, Telegram removes www from the clickable URL attached to the link preview. The resulting URL can open the website's homepage instead of the specific page.
Expected result
The clickable URL attached to the preview should retain the original www from the URL, so that clicking the preview opens the specific page.
