Subject: Telegram repeatedly sends “You have a new message” notifications after MTProto proxy failure, causing severe phone overheating and battery drain
Description:
I had an MTProto proxy configured in the Telegram app. After the proxy server stopped responding, Telegram could no longer connect properly, since Telegram is currently unavailable in Russia without a working MTProto proxy.
After that, notifications started appearing in an incorrect format. Instead of normal notifications containing the actual message text, I began receiving generic Telegram notifications saying:
“You have a new message”
The issue is that these notifications keep appearing repeatedly. I cannot fully dismiss them: even if I clear or swipe them away, they appear again.
Connecting to another working MTProto proxy does not resolve the issue. Even after the connection is restored, Telegram continues to show these generic notifications.
Most important issue:
Because of these repeated notifications, the phone starts heating up significantly and the battery drains much faster than usual. The overheating is noticeable and severe.
Steps to reproduce
Open Telegram on a device located in Russia, where Telegram requires a working MTProto proxy to connect properly.
Configure and enable an MTProto proxy in Telegram.
Confirm that Telegram works normally through the proxy and that regular message notifications are displayed correctly.
Make the configured MTProto proxy unavailable, for example by stopping the proxy server or using a proxy that no longer responds.
Keep Telegram running in the background while the app is unable to connect properly.
Receive one or more new messages while Telegram is in this disconnected or unstable state.
Observe that instead of normal message notifications, Telegram shows generic notifications saying:
“You have a new message”
Try to dismiss or clear these notifications.
Observe that the same type of notification appears again repeatedly.
Configure and connect to another working MTProto proxy.
Confirm that Telegram connection is restored.
Observe that the repeated “You have a new message” notifications continue to appear even after reconnecting through a working proxy.
Leave the device in this state for some time.
Observe that the device starts heating up significantly and the battery drains much faster than usual.
