For years, Telegram had not supported AV1 video format, since Apple did not provide a hardware decoder for it. The decision not to build a software decoder is completely reasonable and understandable.
However, ever since the iPhone 15 lineup came out (more specifically, the A17 chip), Apple has introduced a hardware decoder for the AV1 video format, along with its accompanying Opus audio format.
I understood the decision Telegram made to still hold off on integrating this right when the A17 chip came out, as the device support was limited to two iPhone models.
But this now being over 3 years old, with Apple having three sets of chips and more than 10 different iPhone models which have hardware decoding capabilities for the AV1 format - I think you guys are overdue for integrating the usage of said decoder.
Expected Behavior:
You guys should utilize the AV1 hardware decoder that ships with iPhones nowadays, while making sure the current behavior sticks for older iPhones which do NOT have a hardware decoder for AV1.
Essentially I'm expecting to be able to play AV1 videos directly through Telegram on my iPhone 17 Pro Max.
Also, you guys need to fix the issue where the slider bar for jumping around in a video stays at 0:00, despite the visuals and audibles telegram spits out being indeed the point in which I stopped when scrubbing forwards/backwards.
Actual Behavior:
Currently, at the very best, I get a completely blacked out video page, while the audio track plays. Most of the times both video and audio are completely out.
