On-Demand Comment Threads for Group Messages – Convert to Post
Summary
Add an option to turn any group message (text, photo or video) into a “post” with a dedicated comment thread, so replies do not flood the main chat. Essentially, the behavior should be similar to how comments work in Telegram channels.
A user posts a message in a group, and that message can then be converted into a post, enabling a dedicated comment section.
Once converted, other users can reply under that post, with all comments grouped in a single thread, instead of appearing inline in the main chat feed.
Problem
In active groups, a single message or question often generates dozens of replies. This makes the main feed hard to read and causes multiple conversations to overlap.
Proposed behavior
A user sends a message in a group (text, photo or video).
By long-pressing the message, a new option appears: “Enable Comments” (or “Convert to Post”).
Once enabled, the message remains visible in the main chat but shows a comment indicator, such as “12 comments” or “View discussion”.
All replies to that message are collapsed into a dedicated, nested comment thread that opens when the indicator is tapped.
The main chat stays clean, showing only the original message, optionally with a small preview like “X replies”.
Permissions
By default, only the message author and group admins can enable comments.
Admins may optionally disable comments for a specific post.
Why this is better than Topics
Topics work well for macro organization but require setup in advance and do not fit spontaneous discussions.
This feature enables micro-threading on demand, exactly where engagement naturally happens.
Benefits
Cleaner group chats by preventing long reply chains from overwhelming the main feed.
Greater flexibility, as threads are created only when needed.
Better readability, allowing multiple conversations to coexist without interference.
Familiar user experience, similar to comment systems already used in Telegram channels, Facebook and Reddit.
Consistency with existing Telegram behavior, extending channel-style comments to groups.
Use cases
Questions and answers in community groups.
Photos or videos that trigger long discussions.
Educational or professional groups with multiple parallel conversations.
Large groups with high message volume.
Optional extras
Ability to follow a thread and receive notifications.
Thread preview showing the last one or two replies without expanding the main chat.
Search within a thread as an optional advanced feature.
This approach keeps group chats fast and simple while enabling deeper discussions only when needed.
This would be especially useful for active groups. An on-demand, opt-in approach keeps the main chat clean while allowing deeper discussions only when needed, without forcing Topics or changing the default group experience
