Videos can still be watched in Picture-In-Picture mode
Devices running iOS 14, 15, 16 or 17 are affected
I’m unable to play any video after release of the latest update. I have cleared cache, deleted and reinstalled app, restarted phone, and change settings and still can’t play. I can hear but can’t watch the video. This is on an iPhone 8 with up to date OS version.
Steps to reproduce
Playing any video in any chat or channel. It’s not a saved video but one in channel that is posted. Everything was fine until the latest update 11.5 I believe
iPhone SE3, iOS 17.7.2, Telegram 11.5.1. The video is unable to play, only audio and it become mono. upgrade to iOS18.1.1, can play the video but the audio still mono. The video that can’t choose quality aren’t affected.
Telegram 11.5.2 – still issues with videos (playback lags in the begging, sometimes during the playback) iPad, iPadOS 17.7.2. Regression happened after the video quality selection feature and recent updates. Before videos were playing smooth and without any issues.
I think using a free service, it makes no sense to complain about anything. We should be glad that we have such a platform where developers respond. As a last resort, there are other client versions of the telegram application.
I understand you Farrukh, I really do, indeed. But… it always makes sense. Always. So it does the progress. And at least it’s disrespectful to “feed” clients with “bad food”. And also it can be a marker of many characteristics. E.g. “they can’t do better” (if they did this). And about “other client versions” – I came to this “restaurant”, and it offered me this “dish”, and I want it “well-done” (as it must be). All’s fair. Yes, I can go to another “restaurant” for the same dish (because this rest turned to be “not good enough / at all”). It’s simple decision and action. But…let’s say… Why? And… I’ll be very disappointed, by that disrespect and irresponsibility. But ok, it doesn’t matter now. I’ve found how to fix the current problem – reinstall the app (twice). Now it’s okay (as it was - so-so) about video. As I guess it was just kinda another unexplainable individual glitch (and maybe it wasn’t produced / caused only by the TG app – I also have big unpleasant questions to Apple guys (which aren’t “IT superpowered” as well)). And thus, I delete all my previous two comments (hoping everything will be okay).

Yeah 🎉 . Here we go again! (I didn’t have any illusions about Telegram IT team – the best cringengineering team in the world ever; I didn’t have any doubts about these and others (marketing & management) TG lamers – they really can do much worse; my respect and congrats! – Dyrov Pasha always lives up to the worst expectations for the last 3 years). Yes. They screwed up again. The same problem’s appeared after the new “improving update”. The worst platform video player ever existed (I’m old enough, and professional, qualified IT products user; and I really didn’t meet the worst player in my life). No more words. Just upset and disappointed. Again. (Pasha, bring everything back! the core base of the app; just tired of all this sh**, and too old for this)
