When someone posts a link, Telegram generates a link preview with title, media and some of the text from the page linked. Ever since the October 2023 update, clicking or tapping anywhere inside the preview box opens the link. This means you can't open, expand, zoom or seek some media (images, videos, gifs) from the preview anymore. Allow media to be opened simply when clicked or tapping directly on the media, instead of assuming what the user wants to do. Users have enough intelligence to know to click the colored, underlined link (which is standard UX everywhere) if they want to open the link itself. If you dont want this to be the default, then at least add a setting for it.
Adding another one to the pile here, this is very annoying behaviour and causes concerns about having to actually visit the site that's hosting the image instead of of just viewing from preview. Please make it a setting rather than enforcing it!

they just added this, if you click on it it shows you the image in telegram app
No, for now it's only on Telegram Desktop 4.11.6 as stated above.

Echoing above, this is a major security risk as links to malicious URLs can be hidden behind innocuous images. At least with the image embed pre-October update we could see media without leaving the app for potentially dangerous websites

I guess they have zero intention on reverting this change. I've already heard of some malicious links being hidden like this. It needs to change.

I really do not understand why this change was even made. Previous behaviour was a great feature, plus tracking and security protection. The new behaviour provides no value at all. If you want to increase the click surface, make the background block clickable, but not the media itself.
