There are several popular channels that are being spoofed through direct messaging. The direct messages do not show the user name when you look at the profile, they only show the display name. This is happening more frequently. Very popular accounts with 1 million followers or hundreds of thousands of followers are having people report that they are receiving direct messages from them when the person running the account did not send a direct message.
Many times these fake direct messages ask the question “how long have you been following my channel?”
People can be very easily scammed if they can’t confirm who is actually sending them a message.

I agree with this as I have had it happen twice with someone impersonating someone with a popular channel. Stopping impersonating should be a priority.
