I'm in a few large chats, the kind where there are several thousand messages per day. I don't have the free time to read every one of those messages, but the unread counter makes me feel obligated to. It would be awesome if I could set those channels to just not track my last read position. That way, when I tap on them, I'm dropped at present, and there's no unread counter pressuring me into reading every message. To compare it to other chat systems, it would be a bit like IRC, where if you close the app, you miss any messages sent while the app was closed.
I totally agree it's a most wanted feature if Telegram wants to stand out from the competitors. this 'addiction' to read count could be easily overcome with a 'do not follow' feature.. or 'mark as read' like we have in the email rules..
Wow! This suggestion exist for a year! It is definitely needed to implement! Solution to move those chats to archive doesn't impact situations when I've got about 200 messages per day and only 5-7, which I'm really interested in, where people mention me and write what they want from me. Put this chat to archive after receiving every message where i was mentioned - very annoying ;(

I'd subscribe to Premium for a feature like that. Please also consider it for separate group topics, not only for groups themselves.

Please, my OCD is killing me. I'm tired of seeing annoying numbers.

I agree, I have a large group with a lot of neurodiverse members, and they just can't cope.
They 'have' to open the muted topics, just to clear the number, and sole have even left my group because of it!

This can be implemented as another notification setting: choose sound, turn off sound, snooze notifications, turn off notifications, **and hide unread counter**
When someone creates a topic in a supergroup, it doesn't have a counter badge, only a small dot indicating that this is a new topic, unless you open that topic. This option could replace the counter with the similar dot (or gray out the chat/topic if you can't stand even a dot), and exclude this chat/topic from group/folder/app counter
For me, the logic is this: - important or personal chats - aren't muted and probably even have their own notification sound to react to them - the chats you no longer need - you leave - the chats you no longer need, but with valuable chat history - get moved to archive - group chats or channels - are muted most of the time because of barrage of notifications, but you see the unread counter, so you know what have you missed - and **chats you want to visit from time to time, without feeling the need to read all of it or anxiety of unread messages - you can mute _and_ hide the counter**

This can be merged together with option to start from last message. Sometimes you have hundreds of ignored messages and you won't read them anyway.

This would reduce much of the visual clutter associated with being in groups with topics, as well.
