Problems with Telegram and blind people using Talkback [Part 2]
Steps to reproduce
Settings Menu:
The following functions launch, but cannot be interacted with because TalkBack keeps detecting the functions in the Telegram settings menu: Gift Menu, FAQ, Privacy Policy.
The sliders are disabled, so none of them work (only the one for choosing the time to switch between one proxy or another).
The camera in the attachment menu is disabled, so there is no way to use it. However, if you disable TalkBack to manually press the camera function, TalkBack doesn't detect anything on the screen.
Long press the send button: This used to work but has since been broken. Whether sending a message, voice message, or video message, the long press to send silently, schedule sending, set a reminder (saved messages), or choose a message effect (private chats) doesn't work. This action only works in the album view from the attachment menu.
When you open a story and swipe right or left, TalkBack begins detecting items on the Telegram home screen.
Overall, there are many buttons in the interface that aren't labeled, some of which are functional and others aren't. In addition, there are other buttons that aren't even detected by TalkBack (as if they weren't in the interface, for example, those mentioned in the story capture menu).
Suggestion: Add an accessibility menu with useful features for people with vision impairments. For example: mute/mute when recording and sending a voice message; don't automatically switch between stories (to allow enough time to use the image descriptor).
These observations aren't meant to criticize for the sake of criticism, but rather to contribute from the real-life experience of those who use TalkBack every day. Accessibility shouldn't be an extra, but rather a fundamental part of the design of any app that aspires to be universal.
With more than one billion monthly active users, an app like Telegram has a responsibility to be more accessible and inclusive to people with visual impairments.
Hopefully, the development team will take these observations into account to improve the experience for all its users. In the meantime, we will continue to support each other through our communities, sharing solutions, and highlighting what still needs to be improved.
