IMO Advertising single handedly ruins platforms, it changes them from being focused on providing an awesome service and quality product to generate value, to being focused on getting as much money out of advertising as possible and will inevitably end up the same as all the others.

I really hope telegram pursues an alternative way to generate income that isn't ad-centric and doesn't compromise the reason their platform is great to begin with.

Giving channel owners the option of just paying to remove ads from their channel is a potential option. Sponsored messages in serious channels like news coverage or protest organization can be dangerous.

I'd be down for this tbh. A telegram premium membership type thing is something that I'd buy if it
1. Allows me to disable ads for myself throughout the site
Or/And
2. Allows me to disable ads for my channel

This is tagged as "Android", but of course we would like this to be valid for any platform. We saw ads linked to scams and fake news, and we are afraid about the outcome of such deregulated messages.

Or instead of they should get a cut of the ad revenue as incentive to keep ads enabled. They should then be free to disable ads at the cost of forfeiting that income.

Seriously, people, how do you want telegram to keep running? On magic whiz?
I do not want to see ads either, but I'm willing to pay instead.
Those who cannot pay but still want to use the awesome-cool app, shouldn't they have a chance to do so with ads?
If what you really mean is the same as me, then you should perhaps change the rhetoric to avoid being misunderstood.

The problem with advertising is that to make advertising attractive to someone who wants to run ads, you need to collect data so that you can target specific demographics otherwise the ads are significantly less value. It's the ol slippery slope argument I know, but I have a marketing background and I've consistently watched social platforms perverted by this issue.

I don't want telegram profiling me or selling that data to anyone, even if the data is anonymised, half the point is that it doesn't do that.

Im all for subscription models like discord, but ads in my messaging platform are just a hard nah.

I did state in the comments that if ads are here to stay, I'd be fine supporting the app via subscription payment if that means I get to avoid ads. But honestly channels should be able to okay which ads get shown on their channel

Hm, I guess that makes sense. From the standpoint of Telegram it's going to be convenient if they let you pick your channel's theme (tech / gardening / etc) and then supply you with ads of a certain value.

As for profiling, does a toggle "Do not show personalized ad experience" have any chance of working?
